North West Open 1st March 2008

The LKA had a large team volunteer to compete at the 39th North West Open competition held at the Howe Bridge Sports Centre in Atherton. Clearly the best event for us was the Senior Female Kata where we has all four finalists. Mel Finlay took 4th place with Sochin, Zoe Starr 3rd place with Gankaku, Natasha Balyckyi 2nd with Gojushiho Sho and Ashley Scott took the title with Unsu.

Ashley and Natasha also came 2nd and 3rd respectively in the Senior Female Kumite. Perhaps the best effort of the day though came from Ken Dickinson who at the age of 61 decided to enter the Senior Male Kumite. In his first ever competition he came up against the current ESKA European Champion, Chris Cray, in the first round. Obviously Chris won, but Ken showed terrific spirit and courage in having a go in the first place.
